Grocery Shopping Hacks: In-Store Secrets and Savings Tips

In Part 3 of our three part series, Smart Grocery Shopping: Save More, Stress Less, we address some of the tricks the stores use to get you to buy more. It's almost a game between you and the store. No matter whether it's a large chain or a local market they are in the business of making money, and the only way they can do it is to have you buy things. So be aware of these common "tricks" they use to get you to buy more.

Know the tricks

  • Beware of grouping. Stores often place items together—like chips, salsa, and dip—to encourage you to buy all three. Only grab what’s on your list.

  • Don’t shop at eye level. The most expensive products are usually placed right in front of you. Look at the top and bottom shelves for better deals.

  • Watch the end caps. End cap displays (at the ends of aisles) highlight products you might not need and can trigger impulse buys.

  • Use a smaller cart or basket. We tend to fill the space we have, so smaller carts can help you stick to your list.

  • Know when to shop. Timing can make a big difference:

    • Many grocery stores release new weekly sales on Sundays (though some vary).

    • Ask your store when they restock or mark down items—you might find the best deals then.

Some of these hacks might take a little change in your routine but can really be worth it. Wouldn't you like to win the game?
