Tax-Free or Not? That is the Question.

Tax Free Weekend sounds great to many consumers but there are some things you need to know before you decide to brave the crowds. In Iowa, as in any state that have a Tax Free Weekend, there are limitations.

You need to check your state laws before you go shopping. For example in Iowa the following are NOT considered clothing: watches, watchbands, jewelry, umbrellas, handkerchiefs, sporting equipment, skis, swim fins, roller blades, skates, and any special clothing or footwear designed primarily for athletic activity or protective use and not usually considered appropriate for everyday wear.

Shopping On-line? Items purchased online or even by mail or catalog are exempt from sales tax if they:

1. Meets the criteria to be tax-exempt

2. Are delivered during the tax holiday

3. Are ordered and paid for during the tax holiday

You need to Google your state and add the words tax free weekend.

Remember the savings is small (just the sales tax) so be aware and don't let it lull you into spending more than you had budgeted because you are "saving money".
